Pharr Chief makes collar on man fleeing to Mexico
PHARR - A high speed chase ends just short of the Mexican Border, thanks to a Valley police chief in the right place, at the right time.
A 37-year-old man was captured after leading federal agents on a car chase through Pharr. Police say the driver caused at least three accidents before crashing to a halt on the Pharr International Bridge.
After the crash, the man jumped out of the vehicle and started running for Mexico, that is until the Pharr Police Chief, Ruben Villescas, got in his way.
"We proceeded to stop in the middle of the bridge, got out of our vehicles and saw masses of people running towards our location," Villescas said.
The masses included federal agents. Villescas, who was unarmed, made his move to stop the fleeing suspect.
"He was running towards Mexico, he was ordered to stop," Villescas said. "He did not stop, so I detained him and the pursuing officers that were chasing after him got there and he was arrested."
The man is in federal custody.
"Many of us dream of being at the right time at the right place," Villescas said. "Today was one of those incidents. Fortunate for us, unfortunate for this individual."
